DBT skills will help to:
This is Mary, living with BPD
For years, she has struggled with feelings of emptiness.
When she was young, people often asked her, “Why can't you act normal?” or said, “You only think about yourself.” These words hurt her. She once dated someone who treated her badly. Mary usually feels bad about herself because of what other people say, and they don't say nice things often.
Mary feels things very deeply, so much that it's hard for her to bear. She wants to be loved, but she's afraid that people will not like her, so she keeps them away. She gets mad at other people and at herself too, and sometimes she acts out to get noticed. But when she does this, people think she is trying to trick them, not that she is asking for help. She feels very bad about this, like she has done something wrong. She knows hurting herself on purpose doesn't help, but she doesn't know what else to do.
It seemed to Mary that nothing helps or would help, life was miserable, and the DBT group was just another experiment.
Mary joined the DBT group and began to learn about being mindful, getting along with others, handling stress, and controlling her feelings.
The program is made just for people with BPD. That's why Mary began to notice changes. She now has a bunch of helpful techniques to use when things get tough.
Also, the other people in the group supported Mary. She didn't feel like she was the only one with problems. She saw that they were all working hard to make their lives better, too.
Different skills gave Mary superpowers to fight BPD.
Now, Mary always has a complete toolkit for a happier life.

Interpersonal Effectiveness

Distress Tolerance
